On January 23rd Vitebsk joint organization of NGO “Republican association of wheelchair-bound disabled” with the support of the Office for the rights of persons with disabilities started to realize the project “Labour overcomes barriers”. Project’s main goal is to hold the research of employment and the accessibility of job placement for persons with disabilities in Vitebsk and to find out the weak points in this sphere. All the gathered data will be analyzed and compared. Round table and the presentation of the research results will be held to summarize the results of the project. All the results of the project will be passed to mass-media.
The head of the project “Labour overcomes barriers”, head of Vitebsk joint organization of NGO “Republican association of wheelchair bound disabled” Dmitriy Stemasov commented on the situation: “In Vitebsk the majority of disabled are involved in low-skilled labour. Their labour is almost not used in the sphere of informational technologies and other modern important spheres. But a person in a wheelchair very often has excellent knowledge, experience and huge potential. I am sure that many organizations lose a lot by refusing to employ such persons. We have to clear out the situation by explaining to the heads of companies and PR-managers that disability discrimination is the direct violation of the rights of persons with disabilities”.
Speaking about the practical aspects of the project, Dmitriy Stemasov said: “During the realization of the project on the base of the department of rehabilitation of disabled with orthopedic impairments of Vitebsk boarding house for aged and disabled persons we will hold training courses on Web-design for wheelchair-bound disabled. This profession is very popular and needed and it doesn’t involve a lot of physical activity. Persons with almost all types of disability can do it. After the courses we will hold trainings for disabled on the questions of employment, raising the living level, self-appraisal, communicative skills. We will also render assistance in making business plan and in raising money for starting their own business”.
Wheelchair-bound disabled from Vitebsk who have some experience in working with the computer will take part in the project. Disabled will get education with the support of Vitebsk cultural educational association “Prometei”. More information is available at www.vooooraik.narod.ru
